The NFL didn't do Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick any favors by acknowledging an officiating error cost the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense a touchdown on Sunday. Fitzpatrick, sacked seven times during a 38-10 loss to Pittsburgh last month, says the NFL's No. 1 defense is designed to so overwhelm a quarterback that he worries about every step he takes, every pass he throws, every read he makes.

Twice-suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones will be on his own in his return to the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. This time, there will be no team-employed bodyguards to accompany Jones and try to keep him out of trouble. Benched running back Edgerrin James wants the Arizona Cardinals to release him, his agent said Wednesday night. Cardinals general manager Rod Graves said the team declined to even consider such a move. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said he would continue to talk to the Cardinals to try to persuade them to grant James his release.

Six defensive starters missed Wednesday's practice for the Indianapolis Colts. Among those not participating were safety Bob Sanders, last season's defensive player of the year, defensive end Robert Mathis and middle linebacker Gary Brackett, the defensive captain. Coach Tony Dungy was uncertain about Sanders' status for Sunday's game at San Diego.

Oft-injured wide receiver Craig Davis, a disappointment in his two seasons with the San Diego Chargers, will miss the rest of the season with a groin injury. Davis was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. Tackle Corey Clark was signed from the practice squad to take Davis' spot on the active roster.
